CLEVELAND, Ohio — After being shut out for nearly the entire first half Friday, host Avon Lake scored twice late in the second quarter and then held off winless Elyria in the second half, taking a 38-30 Southwestern Conference victory. The Shoremen, ranked No. 13 in the cleveland.com Top 25, are now 6-1 overall and 4-0 in SWC action, while Elyria falls to 0-7 and 0-4. Avon Lake plays at Olmsted Falls next Friday, while Elyria hosts Amherst. The Pioneers scored first on a 33-yard pass from Justin Godbolt to Brian Todd, and the lead was upped to 9-0 when Avon Lake had a snap to its punter sail over his head and out of the end zone for a safety.
