The Elyria Post 47 of the Ohio State Highway Patrol held a hiring event Dec. 20 as a way to combat the current trooper shortage that the state is facing. Organized and led by 28-year-old trooper Rickie Sartin, Unit 1555, of the Elyria Post, the hiring event welcomed candidates from throughout the county. 'I grew up in Lorain in the inner city,' said Sartin. 'I experienced a lot of violence in my childhood and as I grew older I lost loved ones due to it. I wanted to make a change to my community and so I turned to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
